Description

Based on the manga by Nozomu Tamaki, the broadcast series Dance in the Vampire Bund (2010) centers on a vampire realm that exists in parallel to everyday life. Akira, a normal-seeming high-school student suffering from amnesia, goes about ordinary activities with his classmate Yuki at an elite private academy in Tokyo. Their world changes when Mina Tepes, a descendant of Vlad the Impaler and the reigning princess of the vampire world, arrives at their school. In the first story, she connives to build a settlement dubbed the Vampire Bund on a Tokyo Bay landfill--and claims extraterritoriality for it, as if it were a 19th-century European colony. The subsequent plots--which start and stop arbitrarily--string together violent battles between various villains and Akira, who discovers he's both a werewolf and the sworn servant/protector of the Princess. There are lots of fan-service jiggle shots, but Princess Mina takes the form of a barely pubescent girl, which gives much of the nudity disquieting "lolicon" overtones. Other story elements include an attack on students seeking safety in a church, an assault on a buxom nun, a high-school student's apparently passionate attachment to an elementary-school boy, and "Agni Blood" ("Blood of the Lamb"), a chemical rebel vampires use to turn themselves into walking bombs. Despite all the violence and nudity, Vampire Bund is a crashing bore with long Morris the Explainer scenes. Otaku will recognize the many elements the series borrows from other anime. (Rated TV MA: extensive nudity; graphic violence; violence against women and children; sexual situations, including suggested lesbianism and pedophilia; grotesque imagery; potentially offensive religious imagery; tobacco use) --Charles Solomon (1. Prom Night, 2. Howling, 3. Teen Wolf, 4. Interview with a Vampire, 5. Shadow of the Vampire, 6. From Dusk till Dawn, 7. Innocent Blood, 8. Near Dark, 9. The Lost Boys, 10. Walpurgis Night, 11. Description

Things look grim for our heroes: Goku is suffering from a heart virus that gives him traumatic nightmares, and the medicine Trunks brought from the future takes days to act. But time is in short supply: having killed their creator, Dr. Gero, the androids 16, 17, and 18 are hunting Goku. Vegeta takes on the blonde 18, who beats him to a pulp. Despite Vegeta's protests, Trunks, Tien, and Piccolo join the battle, but they're no match for the murderous cyborgs. The good guys must find a way to increase their powers immediately--Goku's life and possibly the Earth's fate hang in the balance. As they search for Goku, the androids steal a truck and get into a brawl with a gang of motorcycle thugs. The brawl gives Krillin and Trunks the chance to move Goku to Master Roshi's house, while Piccolo seeks the aid of Kami and Vegeta sulks. The journey is interrupted by the news that Bulma has discovered a second time capsule, similar to Trunks's--but whose? The many fans of Dragonball Z will enjoy these installments in the ongoing adventure, but novices may have trouble orienting themselves in a saga that's already lasted more than 100 episodes. The unrated edition is suitable for ages 8 and older, with cartoon violence and minor sexual innuendo. The edited version is the same program that plays on the Cartoon Network, removing blood, nudity, smoking, profanity, and even few frames from the moments when punches land. The uncut versions of these adventures run one to five minutes longer. --Charles Solomon

Description

Underworld Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon Underworld: Evolution Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon Underworld: Rise of the Lycans This prequel to Len Wiseman’s Underworld and Underworld: Evolution is distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Underworld: Rise of the Lycans takes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership. Rise of the Lycans is set mostly within the walls of vampire lord Viktor’s (Bill Nighy) castle, so the film’s silver, black, and blue palette reflects a world happening under moonlight. From the outset, when Viktor brings Lucian, the first werewolf, into the world, this villainous bloodsucker’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), is smitten with Lucian’s hairy appearance and instinctual intelligence. As years pass, Lucian grows tired of watching his race suffer slavery and imprisonment, and recruits a human named Raze (Kevin Grevioux) to assist rebellion. This archetypal plot is not so riveting, and what carries Underworld: Rise of the Lycans are the battle scenes between vampires and werewolves, which are excitingly fast-paced and brutal. The whole film adopts a medieval battlefield aesthetic that carries an otherwise clichéd story about illicit love and freedom fighting. Some characters, like the traitor vampire Tannis (Steven Mackintosh), also intrigues throughout, as one guesses who he will ally with. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans may not be the finest film in the werewolf and vampire archives independently, but its mixed monstrosity makes it unique and entertaining, especially on a big screen. --Trinie Dalton

Three-disc set includes "Underworld" (Unrated Extended Cut) (2003), "Underworld: Evolution," and "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans."

Description

The delightful Kristen Wiig, who's shone in dozens of supporting roles and on Saturday Night Live, hits a bull's-eye with her first lead role in Bridesmaids. Annie (Wiig) isn't doing so well; her bakery failed and she keeps sleeping with a good-looking louse (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), but she's always had her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph, Away We Go) to buoy her up… until Lillian gets engaged. Annie becomes maid of honor, but another friend of Lillian's--the rich and lovely Helen (Rose Byrne, Get Him to the Greek)--wants to take over that position. Misadventures with bad Brazilian food, dress fittings, an unfortunate flight to Vegas, and a sympathetic traffic cop (Chris O'Dowd from British TV comedy The IT Crowd) follow, with increasingly hilarious results. Bridesmaids successfully balances raunchy comedy and character portrait. The embarrassing and socially catastrophic stuff, which in too many movies balloons into absurdity, is here kept in check just enough to allow Annie and the other characters to be multidimensional people--without the movie losing its comic capacity for cringe. (Actress Melissa McCarthy, of Mike & Molly, works miracles with a character than in most hands would be pure cartoon.) Wiig's enormous appeal keeps Annie sympathetic, even as she becomes more and more of a train wreck. Bridesmaids is both smart and dumb, raunchy and earnest, and altogether enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

Kristen Wiig co-wrote and stars in this raunchy comedy from "Freaks and Geeks" creator Paul Feig. Romantically challenged and financially troubled, Annie (Wiig) tries to rise to the occasion when she's tapped to be her best friend's (Maya Rudolph) maid of honor. But will Annie's competition with a controlling bridesmaid (Rose Byrne) bring the wedding plans crashing down? With Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, an uncredited Jon Hamm, and Jill Clayburgh (in her final film). R-rated version; 125 min./Unrated version; 131 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, DVS Dolby Digital stereo, French DTS 5.1, Spanish DTS 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scenes; extended scenes; alternate scenes; gag reel; more. Studio: Funimation Prod Inc Release Date: 03/29/2011 Run time: 106 minutes

In You Can (Not) Advance, the second installment in his four-feature retelling of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hideaki Anno diverges further from the original story line--and pushes the visual boundaries of his epic. Shinji and Rei share a more amicable relationship, but Shinji's fragile calm is shattered by the arrival of pilot Asuka Langley Shikinami. She single-handedly destroys the Seventh Angel, a fantastic creature that suggests a tarantula designed by Gustave Eiffel. This version of Asuka is even more abrasive than the original, and complains more bitterly about being ordered to share quarters with Shinji. When the experimental Eva that Asuka is testing mutates, Commander Ikari forces Shinji to attack it, even though it may cause her death. Horrified at his brutality, Shinji quits--until a new, more powerful Angel strikes at NERV headquarters. Seeing Rei absorbed by the Angel, Shinji charges back to rescue her. The power supply to his Eva fails, but Shinji forces it to continue fighting through sheer will power. It mutates into what Ritsuko calls "a divine being" that may cause the Third Impact. While the story line of the films is tighter than the TV program, it's no less convoluted: Kaji brings Commander Ikari "the Key of Nebuchadnezzar"; the SEELE cabal continues their plotting to bring about the Human Instrumentality Project, which is somehow linked to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Anno adds some new characters, notably pilot Mari Makinami Illustrious. The larger budget of the feature films is clearly evident: the backgrounds are more carefully rendered, the cinematography more imaginative, the animation more polished and special effects more special. The scenes of the three Evas running in a coordinated attack have unprecedented weight and power. The prismatic colors, thunderous explosions, and eerie lighting in the final battle show that like the original TV series, Anno's new vision will be influencing artists on both sides of the Pacific for years to come. The Neon Genesis Evangelion movies are must-haves for any otaku or student of animation, and fans can only wait impatiently until the third film appears. (Rated PG-13: violence, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Since the advent of ASIC - the Arfoire Syndicate of International Crime-morality has all but vanished. As much as 80 percent of all students are rumored to worship the being known as Arfoire. Parents, nkowing this is a poor object to worship, went ahad and taught their children to do so. The government turned a bind eye instead of crushing this crisis in its infancy. Thus, Gamindustri fell into complete and utter disarray. The citizens have come to accept all of the corruption as normal. They take no issue wih acquiring items illegally. Those who were victims of this mentality became exhausted and were sent to wander the Gamindustri Graveyard forever. Key Features: All new free roaming style system and a combo attack system Hilarious story with lots of references to the game industry Improved user interface and HUD Improved field maps with visual enemy encounter that gives you a better sense of adventuring Multiple endings, Over 50 hours of gameplay Adorable characters that appeals to hardcore anime fans

The sequel takes place in 20XX, some unknown time after the first game. The four goddesses are shown fighting Arfoire, who has activated her HDD powers. The goddesses are quickly defeated, and Nepgear surrenders. They are held captive in the new landmass known as the Industry Graveyard. IF and Compa arrive there as well, and find out that their friends are in trouble. They attempt to proceed, but a giant mech by the name of Judge blocks their path. In an attempt to stall for time, IF singlehandedly fights Judge while Compa frees Nepgear. They return to find IF damaged, and Nepgear tries to fight Judge. Unfortunately, the mech is too powerful for them, so Nepgear uses the last of her energy to temporarily blind Judge, while passing out in the process. The gameplay for the sequel has been revised since the first game. Instead of dungeons consisting of one big map, each dungeon is split into sections, through which the main characters Nepgear, UNI, Ram, and Rom must travel through to proceed. The random encounter feature in the first game has been removed, instead replacing them with monsters who will appear in the dungeons and begin to chase the player on sight. Various actions can be carried out while in the dungeon. Small cubes can be picked up by pressing the X button while near them. When approached by an enemy, pressing Square will swing your weapon in front of you. When an enemy is encountered this way, Nepgear's party gains an upper hand through a Symbol Attack. Some crystals must be picked up while in a dungeon. There are several different endings, which primarily depend on the amount of shares a landmass has (in the case of landmass specific endings), maxed Lily Rank for specific characters, and in special cases, if the player has recruited certain characters or witness certain events or not. If the player has not completed the criteria for an ending other than Normal, then the player will re
