The three-part OAV Super Robot Wars: The Original Generation (2005) was the first attempt to adapt the popular video game to animation: the broadcast series Super Robot Wars: OG - Divine Wars followed a year later. The Earth Federation relies on the mecha suits called Personal Troopers (or PTs) for its defense. But the unveiling ceremony for the Bartoll, the latest model from Wong Heavy Industries, turns into an attack by hordes of Bartoll. Only a small cadre of ace pilots can protect the planet from the insidious scheme of scientist Wilhelm von Jürgen. The complicated mecha battles in Super Robot Wars will please fans of the game, but the minimal story doesn't make much sense and the characters remain underdeveloped. A booklet and a DVD of extras can help sort things out, but no one would guess that Kuro and Shiro, the talking cats who accompany pilot Masaki Ando, "were both made from Masaki's subconscious." Director Jun Kawagoe's nervous camera work and choppy editing make it hard to follow the mecha battles on Earth and in space. In Japanese only. Fallout 2 takes you farther into the desolate wastes of post-World War III California than you'd ever have imagined. Based on the most popular game of 1997, the new system retains the kitschy-cool look and feel of the original while expanding the game world by an order of magnitude (and fixing some problems with combat and ally interaction). The setup is similar: you have been chosen to save your community (this time a straggly bunch of tribal descendents of the original game's hero) by seeking the fabled Garden of Eden Creation Kit. The game is slower going than the first, which makes building your character up from tribal hick to Nietzschean Ubermensch all the more satisfying. While movement, combat, and inventory are still essentially the same, there are so many more quests to perform and facts to learn and keep track of that you'll find yourself playing again and again long after you've won the first time. Be warned: There is extremely graphic violence and some graphic sex parading through this game from start to finish. Though you can set the tone down a bit through the main control panel, developments that happen on this adult setting are integral--so if you want a G-rating, try elsewhere.
