Francis Poulenc was a composer who commanded many different styles, and these 31 songs are so well chosen for variety of length, weight, mood, and character that no two of them are alike, although some are connected through their poets or subject matter. In Four Children's Songs, poems that begin innocently become scary; they are set to music of utmost simplicity. There are outpourings of ardent passion, tenderness, joy, sorrow, longing, and nostalgia, as well as sarcastic parodies, jazzy cabaret songs, and one setting of Shakespeare in English. The performances are wonderful. White's bright, light tenor is just right for this music; he brings out every nuance and inflection with complete idiomatic identification, and his diction is perfect. Led by the very inspiring Andrea Rogers, a dancer who incorporates ballet, Pilates, yoga, and traditional workout moves, Xtend Barre Lean & Chiseled is appropriate for all fitness levels. Beginners always have a way to modify the moves, and experts can leap and bound to their hearts' content to add challenge. And Rogers's routines are quite precise and will give results if done regularly. The arms segment, for example, is just 11 minutes, but even if you do the moves without weights, you will feel your triceps and shoulders burning in that good way. Like all good exercise instructors, Rogers urges one or two more sets of repetitions than anyone would be inclined to do on her own--and the muscles feel the difference. To do the routine, you need light weights. And Rogers is serious when she says "one-, two, or three-pound weights," because five-pounders are almost impossible to use for all the reps she presents. The exerciser also needs a regular household chair, the back of which is used for balance. Rogers's routine also focuses on the all-important (and often overlooked) importance of balance, which will further help engage the core. Extras include a slight bio of Rogers, as well as previews of some other workouts distributed by the manufacturer. The acknowledged inspiration for The X-Files, and the basis for an updated 2005 network version, Kolchak: The Night Stalker was a short-lived 1974 series spun off from a pair of extremely popular made-for-TV movies about the supernatural adventures of dogged newspaper reporter Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin). Though plagued by low ratings and critical brickbats, the show has cultivated a huge cult following over the past three decades, which has given rise to this three-disc set, which compiles all 20 episodes of the show. Though none of the episodic stories matches the suspense and writing strength of the Night Stalker or Night Strangler movies, TV horror fans will appreciate the parade of interesting and inventive monsters encountered by Kolchak (including a witches' coven in "The Trevi Collection"; an Aztec cult in "Legacy of Terror"; a Hindu Demon in "Horror in the Heights," which was penned by Hammer Films scribe Jimmy Sangster; and a headless biker in "Chopper," an episode deemed in extreme poor taste by Stephen King and co-written by Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Sopranos creator David Chase). McGavin is of course topnotch as Kolchak, and he's well-matched by Simon Oakland as his hot-tempered boss; guest stars include Scatman Crothers, James Gregory, Phil Silvers, Eric Braeden, Tom Skerritt, and Richard Kiel as the monster in two back-to-back episodes. Sadly, no extras accompany this fun collection of Kolchak's creepiest cases. --Paul Gaita
